Product Review: Eucerin Daily Balance Body Lotion

Most of us know the skin is the largest organ in our bodies. It's also among the most abused. We expose it to all kinds of hazards, often intentionally when it comes to tanning and makeup and drying soaps. As we age, we pay for those sins with everything from wrinkles and age spots to skin cancers.

I grew up along the ocean and had a backyard indoor pool, and as a teenager I didn't use sunscreen. In fact, because tanning was so competitive at my high school, and Hawaiian Tropic so expensive, my girlfriends and I literally fried our skin in Crisco. Then in college, I once fell asleep for four hours in the sun. A friend and I spent that night in a hospital emergency room. I still bear the scars from that lapse in judgement.

Runners are particularly prone to skin damage, which is why when the folks at Eucerin told me about a new product and a new campaign, I was immediately on board.

They sent me a bottle of their new Daily Skin Balance Body Lotion, which contains "a unique, patent-pending technology with provitamin B5, glycerin and pH buffer." My husband and I have been using it daily for two weeks now. It soaks in quickly and without leaving a greasy film. I'm not a fan of the light fragrance, but it doesn't seem to bother my husband.

I waited to write this review to note any visible improvements with daily use. I have a couple of dry patches that itch constantly. Normally if I apply fragranced lotions to these areas, they sting. This lotion didn't.

What's Your Slavery Footprint?

I just came across an app that immediately intrigued me because it brings awareness to something way too often overlooked in this country. It's called The Slavery Footprint , and I found out about it this morning courtesy of this post . Living in California, and traveling regularly through the Central Valley where a bulk of everyone's U.S.-bred fruits and nuts are produced, I became keenly aware of how poorly farmhands are treated in this country. I even blogged about it several years ago . Some of us tend to feel morally superior because of the foods and lifestyle choices we make. I know of a lot of middle-aged running friends who are motivated by their parents to run. Their mother or father was in poor health for many years and it ultimately cost them their lives (or at least a higher quality of it), and so one reason they initially put on a pair of running shoes was to avoid the same fate. However, that's not the sort of parental connection outlined in a provacative post about the link between exercise and genetics in this morning's Daily Beast. It reflects a couple of scientific studies that show we may be genetically encoded to favor workouts. That means some of us will never enjoy exercising like others, nor will our children.
