A warning for everyone, local or not
No matter where you live or who you are, please be on the alert when you are out and about. You can bet I am constantly carrying my cell phone (I usually do anyway) when I'm running.
First, the message from police:
Police Warning
On Friday, Dec. 8, 2006, at approximately 12:25 pm a lone female jogger was the victim of an attempted rape on the north part of Miramar Lake near the dam. Thesuspect is described as a Hispanic male, 20 to 25 years
old, 5’8”, 135 to 145 pounds, with dark skin, short black hair, and brown eyes. He was wearing a red baseball cap, red t-shirt with an unknown logo or writing, and blue jeans. He was last seen running up one of the trails towards Scripps Ranch Boulevard. Citizens are advised to call the San Diego Police Department with any information. (Police sketch to the left.)
At this time, we are advising those using the lake
to take normal precautionary measures to stay safe. It is suggested that persons not jog/walk/bike in the remote portions of the park alone and not use the small trails leading down to the lake from both Miro Circle and Scripps Ranch Boulevard.
Sgt. Jeffrey Peterson, SDPD Northeastern
And now, another woman's account. She lives just up from the lake in one of the newer developments off Scripps Ranch Blvd.Ladies
I am sure you all heard about the woman who was attacked at Lake Miramar while jogging in the afternoon on Friday. Well, the man was ready to try again yesterday at 9:30 a.m. while a woman was walking through our neighborhood. She observed a man who met the description ( 5'4" Hispanic male about 145 lbs with red shirt and
baseball cap) on a mountain bike following her as she was on her morning walk. When she would stop, he would stop and pretend to fiddle with his bike. When she crossed the street, he did too. There was no question in this woman's mind that this man was the one. Fortunately, she was carrying her cell phone. She called the police and her husband to pick her up and she was unharmed. Scared to death, but not physically hurt.
I walk constantly around our neighborhood and on trails and know that many of you do too. This man is bold. His attempts have been in broad daylight. Please walk with a friend (canine or otherwise) and keep your eyes wide open.
