Once again I sat out what appeared to be another superb Saturday morning run with our training program. I guess when you re-aggravate a tenacious ankle injury that took months to heal, it takes more than a couple of weeks to mend again.
Instead, I volunteered at our aid station at Morley Field, near North Park, which meant sitting in a cushy director's chair with my spiced chai latte and shooting the breeze with fellow volunteer Erin while runners came and went. I also shot photos for our online album, some of which I'll share here.
First, the group decides on a route - or several options, in this case. Ordinarily we follow a map with a prescribed run, but today everyone decided to wing it. That flexibility and innovation is what I love best about this group.
We always do a warm-up first.
Oh, come on...you wouldn't have been able to pass up this shot either. (Besides, it's not like I was 'behind' everyone.)
Most of the group just before everyone took off in all directions.
That's fellow San Diegan running blogger AKA Alice, who ran with part of her herd this morning.
Just as our runners were finishing up, the men's USATF Dirt Dog Championship Race was starting.
More from near the front of the pack.
And our fearless leader with a boo-boo on his arm where he fell down on the course. He skinned his knee too. Gotta love the additional challenges of cross-country.I wish I could have stayed to watch the women's race. I'm sure it would have inspired me. But I had to get home in time to make a
salad to complement the fixings at
Christine and Todd's place, where we intend to enjoy an afternoon of football and fellowship. I better watch what I eat, though, since you don't burn nearly as many calories running your mouth all morning.

Ha! Running at the mouth...hope you're having fun this afternoon! I have some friends who ran the race this morning, wish I could have watched it!
Enjoy the sunshine today!
Looks like a great day!! Wishin' I could of raced today, too.
ACK!!!!! two shots of my backside! LOL! I had no idea you were taking that picture of our bend-over and stretch. Did you and Jamison set that up? I wouldn't have been able to resist either.
Also, If I'd had my camera, I'd have taken a picture of you dancing in the back of the pickup truck :-)
It was great seeing everyone this morning. You'll be back and running with us soon!
It is great that you got out there to volunteer. Hope the ankle heals quickly.
Look after your ankle, jeezzz it is frustrating isn't it?
Great shots, love "Alice", she is a hoot! Glad everyone had a great day.
So wait a minute. I just went over to Christine and Todd's blog and see that you were rooting for Ohio State? How embarassing is it being one of the few teams that USC beat this year? (Sorry - we need to really prop up our successess this year. I'm waiting to get beat by UCLA)
Reading this reminds me of how little warming up I do. Looks like a great day for a run.
Saturday morning group runs are the best!
Go OSU! I'll jump on the band wagon. Although I went to Kent State, I'm still an Ohio boy in there somewhere. ;-)
Look after your ankle and the next time you will not be a volunteer but the winner!!!
Louise Says...I have spent soooo much time at Morely it isn't even funny, ahhh this is the last year though...sorta bitter sweet. This Achilles is doing much better, new shoes are improving...one day I will be able to run again, I can feel it!
Louise,
Are you going to help with the Christmas Card Lane Run? I have the very good fortune to see our Anne from time to time, but miss you!!
I LOVE the butt shot!! :-)
