Note to Self: No Rogue Water Bottles
OK, I'm almost a week late on this, but I just saw that the first two women to finish the Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee last weekend were disqualified. One grabbed a water bottle between aid stations. The other used an iPod. I guess the elites really are different than the rest of us.
Two Runners Disqualified From Top of Lakefront Marathon
I am impressed that the woman who finished first didn't try to say it's a stupid rule and instead admitted she did not read the fine print well enough. The other "winner" wasn't as gracious. The iPod rule's been around for awhile now (though it's been amended to make it a race director's perogative); I wasn't aware grabbing water in between aid stations was a big no-no too.

hmmm water thingy is a little weak BUT I guess if enough elite runners do separate water grabs it becomes an unfair advantage? hmmm
anyways, a rule is a rule !
PS I would be an awful Race Director cause I would have let them both slide - LOL
I wonder why they have the water rule?
The iPod/MP3 player debate I've known about. I've never heard about the water rules for elites, but I guess the idea is to keep everyone on the same level, that everyone is taking in the same nutrients, if any.
Does that mean elites can't run with fuel belts either? I mean what's the difference?
To me it's an example of there being too many rules.
seems highly ridiculous to have rules about water. i mean if someone needs water, they should get water. better than the suffering physical ill effects. sheesh. i mean are there potty break rules too? (not that elites even NEED to take a potty break and if they did they would most likely lose, but placing rules on water seems like placing rules on basic body functions)
I agree with the race director's decision, you never know what is in the water bottle...good or bad. As for Ipods, I agree to that too, it is an enhancement, think about it, you run better with a faster beat ~ right?
I've been in races where they pull your number & chip if they see you running with an Ipod.
Rules are Rules...
I'd heard about the ipod thing - but I never worry about it because i know i'm never in contention to actually win something, and i think those are the people they really apply the rule to.
But no water in between stations?! WTH?
