Bringing It Home

Our Saturday training runs typically are held in either East County or near the coast, but not near my coast in La Jolla or Del Mar. The exceptions have all been races or those runs I've hosted. That includes this morning's trail run in Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve.

It was nice to not wake extra early and not worry about mysterious car sounds or consuming so much gas to basically go for a run. All I had to do was grab my handheld water bottle, a few copies of the map and do a slow-jog warmup to our gathering spot at Canyonside Community Park (where it's FREE to park and open early, by the way).

I wasn't ready to christen my new Nikes, so I wore my old Mizunos, which removed any doubt that they were at least partially responsible for my prolonged achilles tendonitis. A mile into the run I felt that old familiar ache. And seven miles later, under otherwise perfect conditions, I couldn't stand the stabbing pain any longer.

Once everyone had returned safely to home base, I walked home via a gigantic dirt hill shortcut and passed through a neighborhood I normally only see in the dark or at dawn. I realized it's been many months since I was home this early on a Saturday morning. Seeing everyone in action, and happy, almost made me forget how much my ankle hurt. Almost.

So sorry the morning ended with a sore ankle for you. Hope it heals up real soon. Sounds like it was a beauty of a run. Way to go, you incredible run-planner, you!

I also wore an older pair of shoes for those trails when I ran there a few weeks ago. That's a beautiful place to run! I hope your ankle will be OK with a little rest and the Nikes.

Happy Halloween!

My husband has had some huge achilles problems and tendonitis and he just told me this morning that he thinks it's from his Mizunos. He tossed them five minutes later. Strange. Gorgeous picture of Pensasquitos Canyon. I'm sure it's cooler there right now!

Yeah...I'm starting to wonder if my PF and related foot issues are due to the Sauconys...GAH. Who knew shoes could be such an issue!

Always enjoy your pictures!

Hope the Nikes work well for you. I have a great pair right now... and Nikes are particularly special to us.

I think you need a run in those new shoes, and we need some pictures! Hope your Halloween was fun.

You are so lucky to have such beautiful scenery! Wow! Well, at least now you know it (the pain) definitely was partly due to those shoes!

I am also the type that likes to wait for the ideal day to run in a new pair of shoes... preferably I use them to walk around in for a week or so first.

I agree with starting late and finishing early! I've been in heaven the past few weeks since the marathon. It's nice to be done and back home by 9 on Saturdays.

The only time I ever strayed from Asics I had a most uncomfortable couple of days in some Sauconys. Ever since then, as cool as some other shoes look, I stick with my Asics.

Sorry about your pain. I tried on a Mizuno a while back and didn't like all those waves in my sole.
