Top EcoFriendly Energy Bars

A hat tip to my friend Annie in Elizabeth City, N.C., who sent me a link to a Sierra Club taste test on energy bars. In case you're wondering which were deemed the best tasting and best for the environment, here are the top five:

1. LUNA White Chocolate Macadamia
$1.39 | lunabar.com
"Luna bars, marketed to women by the makers of Clif Bars, are 70 percent organic."

2. OLYMPIC GRANOLA Almond Chocolate Trail Bar
$2.99 | olympicgranola.com
"Olympic Granola's corn-syrup-free bars are made of non-genetically-modified ingredients that are grown without chemical sprays."

3. ONE LUCKY DUCK Chewy Almond Crunch Bar
$6.50 | oneluckyduck.com
"Handmade in small batches, this pricey bar is from a company that sells only raw, vegan, organic products."

4. CLIF BAR Cool Mint Chocolate
$1.39 | clifbar.com
"Clif Bars are 70 percent organic, and the company engages in many sustainable actions, including diverting most of its waste and using biodiesel for its fleet."

5. HONEY STINGER Peanut Butter 'n Honey
$1.49 | honeystinger.com
"Honey Stinger is 100 percent wind powered, and employees get time-off credit for carpooling, bicycling, or walking to work. The company recycles all paper, glass, and metal and maintains a community vegetable garden outside of its building."

Wow. $6.50 for an energy bar? A little out of my range. I'm not sure I could enjoy that if I'm humping on the trail.

Also - Clif bars ar 0.99 at Trader Joes. The only downside is they don't carry all flavors. My fav is apricot.

I eat Clif bars - but only half at a time. They are too heavy.
Luna bars are too sweet.
Can u tell I'm a picky eater ; )

I'm like kara with the Clif bars....I can stomach only 1/2 at a time. Same holds true for Luna bars...can I tell you how happy I am that I can eat white chocolate and macadamia (somewhat) guilt free?

Thanks for the list!

Cliff Bars used to be a staple for me when I first started marathon training 5 years ago. I sort of got burnt out on them, but I see that white chocolate and macadamia is at the top of the list. I have yet to try that flavor. It sounds like something I would really like. :)

Ditto on the half a bar at a time.

I like Luna bars. Less carb and more protein than CLIF bars.
