It’s interesting what each of you would have done in the situation that presented itself last week on the bike path. Here’s what happened after I found a young man apparently passed out cold and lying on his side, cell phone nearby, just as a man in workout clothes approached from the opposite direction.
I rode away.
I didn't check first to see if the guy was OK.
I didn’t call 911 soon as I could.
Something just felt very strange, aside from the obvious obstacle.
I got to work, told everyone what happened and was universally condemned.
Well, maybe not everyone strongly disapproved. One other woman rode that bike path to work a little later that morning, and she too found the guy in the exact same position. Like me, she was spooked because she was in an isolated area. And because there was a guy in workout clothes approaching from the opposite direction.
So, I may not have made that 911 call – but I believe, in the end, I did make the right call.

Sounds fishy to me! Perhaps you DID make the right decision.
I trust your intuition. You did the right thing.
I've been waiting to hear about what you did about that predicament...thanks for sharing!! You are smart.
Good luck to you on the dog sitting...and I hope your guest has less energy.
HOW FUNNY!!! I did pack those three pockets with too much crap and ended up redistributing everything at mile 7 this morning. See, you ARE REALLY smart!
Super Spooky, I think.
Glad you are OK.
Hmm... Very interesting. With me they would have had an easy target. And to think I went to USC....
Oh - and the next time you *should* call 911. Don't stop though. Let the police deal with it...
I think you should have called 911. Once - you could be wrong and someone is in need and secondly even if this was a scam it''s important that the police knows about this. I would go to you local police department and check if they got anything on this.
Stephanie makes a good point -- one that I didn't consider right away, which is to call police to protect someone else if this was a scam. I did check our online police blotter and nothing was reported.
You know...it's easy to sit here in the cheap seats and write about what we think we woulda/coulda/shoulda done, but the truth is you gotta go with your gut. If you had a feeling/intuition that something was wrong, then you were smart to listen to that.
Running/riding in isolated areas always makes me nervous.
I read your tweet about car trouble. Sorry I missed you this morning. I have family in town next weekend, otherwise I would have volunteered to help out w/the Balboa 8.
So that guy was still there when your friend went by? That is strange.
My mom always tells me to trust my gut. I am glad you did, or you might not have been writing this post.
That is so bizarre. I'm glad that you're okay.
I think it's really strange that the same scenario played out with your friend - the guy in the workout clothes is just too strange. Yep, I agree with the others - call 911 to make sure everyone (guy down, passer-by) is safe.
spooky. well the first instinct sometimes is immediately to run to the "rescue", when you are in an isolated and as a woman, I totally understand why you did not stop. heck, i even find myself crossing the street in situations like that because you just never know. but i'm also the type of person that immediately, immediately locks the car doors upon entering. however, i probably would have called the cops when i was a safe distance away, and then hid in the bushes until they came to see what happened.
Good decision, although a 911 call would have been helpful. Go with your gut!
I'm glad you kept on. Even in first aid training, one is taught to approach possible victims with extreme caution.
Plus, if there was some other male who could check and call for help for the guy instead of you, that was probably best.
Thank you for the reminder to stay safe out there.
