This Beats Cleaning the Bathrooms

Another Saturday afternoon, another long list of neglected routine housework. Had a terrific, lazy hazy trail run this morning, so in that spirit I think I might dawdle just a little bit more and catch up on some miscellaneous, running and non-running items here at Run DMZ.

Last Year for a Rockin' Finish at the MCRD
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego must find a new place to finish after this year. The Marine Corps Recruit Depot is expanding its barracks and can't host the race finish anymore. No doubt the change will also alter the course as well. It's tough to find a place for 20,000 people, their friends and family and all those cars to carry them home.

Rock 'n' Roll Marathon to End MCRD Run

Computer or Camera?
I’m not sure either about this week’s Wordless Wednesday photos. My computer somehow stored these angles I created by maneuvering my mouse in Google Maps. The camera shots then showed up in a temp file like you see. I saw them and thought they were, as Rob said, “trippy” – especially since they were used to map out a trip.

Faria’s Finished with School
Remember that adorable black lab that we watched head off to college for Canine Companions for Independence? Well, Faria got pretty far along before deciding she was a misunderstood multi-tasker living in a one-command world. In other words, the dog was too easily distracted to be placed with someone disabled. Instead, she’s now going here, there and everywhere with a loving family just a few miles from the one that raised her --- and who now get to see her more often. She’s already met her replacement in her former family’s household, Twilah, who is going to have some big paws to fill.

This Guy Belongs on Top Chef
Meet John, the son of very good friends Annie and Edwin. I remember John when he was just a little kid. Last time we saw him was when he and his sister came to visit us after we moved to San Diego. I think his mom put them up to it. I also think he has a real shot at Top Chef, don’t you?

Couldn't embed the video, so go here to see John's Top Chef application.

Money for Nothing, And the CHIPs Are Free
Finally, I was heading home from work the other night when the always tone-deaf traffic reporter issued a deadpanned warning that suspected bank robbers or drug dealers were throwing stacks of $20 and $100 bills out their car during a high-speed police chase. The pursuit was heading my way but the cops caught the guys before I got to witness this. Now that ain’t workin'.

Motorists Scramble for Freeway Money

We met a lady after the Sue Krenn 15k who works over at MCRD and told us about this being the last year the SDRNR marathon ends there. Michael and I were just discussing this topic last night. If it doesn't end at MCRD, then where? Will the entire marathon have to be rerouted or just the last 6 miles or so? What other area (like a college or sports center) is large enough to accomodae 20,000 runners plus spectators and vendors? What ever they decide, I hope they do away with that switch-back at Friars road, my least favorite part of that marathon!

That would be tremendous if John gets a spot on Top Chef!

It might be a blessing for the SD Marathon to not end at the MCRD. That is the WORST part of the run...through the industrial area of Point Loma...no scenery... I agree with Irene, everything from the switch-back at Friars should go...but where?

Loves the reference to the Dire Straits song. That was quite fitting. People actually STOPPED on the freeway and got out to get the money??? Geez.
