I've had a spectacular couple of weeks at work, where I'm getting things done and embarking on my next big project. A lot of runners who love following training schedules also are project-driven in other areas of their lives. Me too. Unfortunately, it's left little time for life's other pleasures. I'm looking forward to tidying up the house this weekend, restocking the refrigerator and then kicking back and catching up with everyone in blogland. (Including contributing another meme for Juls!)
The price of regular unleaded gas came close to $4.50 here earlier in the week. It's now back down to an average $4.39, as if that's an improvement. There's also strong talk about mandatory water conservation by this fall. Add in soaring costs of food, thanks in part to ethanol production and the aforementioned fuel inflation, and I've got to wonder if road and trail race entries will inch or shoot up as well. I pondered the cost of out-of-town races in an earlier Complete Running article. An accompanying poll asked if a recession would impact race decisions. Just more than half said it wouldn't, but I wonder about that percentage now that people are starting to feel the pinch.
Speaking of gas prices, many of you may already be familiar with sites that provide the cheapest gas prices within an area. But just in case: Here's one I use that's been fairly accurate.

I think since some of us are compulsive athletes, it does not really matter what the price of gas is to get to a race..
The race fees are going up everywhere, kinda of crazy..
But trail races seem to stay the same, plus you get real food for the race.. Can't beat that for price..
I bought a Garmin Nuvi 680 GPS for mr car, mainly because I needed a Bluetooth hands-free system for my car. It also comes with MSN Direct, which along with traffic information, also has a feature that displays all the local gas prices in the vicinity you are driving. The only problem is that they only poll prices every 2-3 days, and with the current rapid changes in pricing ($0.25/gal just in the last week), it is sometimes off. But I still use it often.
Maybe part of the answer is that some of us have been "counting the cost" of driving for longer than others. (And the race registration fees too.)
But we will keep running.. running "for our lives" !!
Wishing You a good weekend.
That is absolutely unbelievable the price of gas! Wow. I haven't been living in So Cal since 2006 and I have the joy of riding public here in Budapest...but wow. That's crazy high! I knew it was going up. I like your wordless wednesdays.
Thanks for link to the site for gas prices. There's a place near my home (that I never go to) with the lowest prices (if you can call $4.27 a gallon a low price!) Yikes...
High gas prices haven't affected my running/race decisions yet (some things are a priority), but it's certainly affected other driving decisions. I'm an English teacher and I'm trying to figure out how I can bike to work in the fall (with all my graded papers and a laptop?) We'll see...
It probably doesn't matter for shorter local races, but I got to think it'll impact marathons that people drive to.
It's quickly getting to the point where running is about the only activity I can afford.
gas prices rising all over the world.I am feeling confusion about this matter.
$4.50!! WOW! We're around $3.85...I've seen a few $3.90s which is just crazy. I know it will impact our summer vacay plans later this year, not so much race plans. I decided a while back travel + races don't mix (for me) well - you don't get to sight see as much when you know you have to get up early, eat pasta, etc etc. And with the price of everything going up I have cut way back on local races - a friend asked me to do a local 6 mile race with her a few weeks ago that would've cost $45 and there was NO way I could justify that!!
