We both worked the third of five aid stations during the San Diego Track Club’s 16-mile train run. And we both had a blast despite deep cloud cover and chilly temps. Our stop was 9 miles into the course at the southern tip of Carlsbad State Beach. I’ve written before about running this; it’s truly an event and this morning no less than three big running clubs were out there training along the same course. It made for some congestion and flare-ups between runners and cyclists and motorists.
I ended up taking two injured runners back to home base in Solana Beach, cutting off two cyclists in Encinitas when I turned right at a green light and they apparently intended to head straight. They were forced to turn right with me. I’m still baffled who had the right of way. From their dirty looks, I thought it might be them; from my traveling companions, it appears to be me. I’m really bothered by it hours later, so any guidance from you cycling folks would be most appreciated. Keep in mind that in San Diego, at least, right-turning cars are supposed to merge into the bike lane the last 200 yards before turning -- it's a dotted line then and perfectly legal. I actually stayed out of the lines because I knew those guys were closing in, but I still came very close to clipping them unintentionally.

It was seeing you at water station #3, briefly catching up, and meeting your sister. :) Sneaky beach trip! Made her work! LOL.
If I'm not mistaken, I belive bicycle riders are supposed to follow the same rules as motor vehicles. It appears you had the right-of-way.
I hope the injured runners will be OK.
Glad to hear the near collision was just that and nothing more. Pretty sneaky trick you played on your sister. I like it!
Congratulations, Volunteer!!
Good for You.. and Them!
A very busy day with many injuried people. Congrats to the volunteers!
That's great support for just a training run!

That would bother me too and sounds like something I would do unintentionally. I found you through Rob's blog. Looking for training inspiration.
Gald to hear it was only a near miss out there..
I always think, pedestrians 1st, bikers 2nd, cars always at the end of the "right of way" totem pole. My opinion anyways...
Oops...better luck with the bikers...
And thanks for your vote!!
I really love your runner servant attitude. We should all take some cues from you and give back a little more.
I was in SD on Sunday for the Dodgers vs. Padres game. What a beautiful day it was.
from everything i've read, the cyclists had the right of way. as a motorist, when you approach an intersection with a bike lane to the right occupied by bikes, you are required to treat the bike lane as a lane of traffic and either yield or merge before turning right.

Ooooh I know this water stop oh so well, looks like it was a perfect day. Tell those damn cyclist that YOU have the right of way...after all you are bigger!!! Okay so maybe I need more info to fairly judge the situation.
