Let's Give Peace Another Chance

I love running along Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach. Most San Diegans do. For the past 18 months, as you climbed the cliffs, you'd see this groovy, stained-glass peace symbol that someone mysteriously erected. You can't really tell from this file photo at the San Diego Union-Tribune Web site, but that island rock is a ways off and difficult to scale, so whoever put it up went to some trouble -- both in the artwork's construction and placement.

I haven't been out that way for some time, but I was saddened to hear it had been stolen and its creators were appealing to the thieves to return it so it can be displayed again, maybe this time in a local gallery. I'm sure soon something else will replace it on the rock (that seems to be the OB tradition), but it's pretty hard to top that one for longevity and symbolism -- especially in today's troubled times.

It's a shame that someone stole it. Thanks for the interesting post.

That was cool, too bad some one took it.

What a shame. Why are some people such idiots? I hope they give it back, but it's probably hanging in some kids' parents garage over their beat up chevy, smelling of marijuana and whatever else kids are doing these days.

I hope the peace sign is returned, or another one is created. It sucks when that stuff happens!

That's sad that someone took it, hopefully they will find it..

How little symbols mean so much these days.. Something we need.

It's a shame, but I'm not surprised it happened.

OB has some wonderful traditions ... ever been to the beach marshmallow fight after the 4th of July fireworks? Take a couple of bags of marshmallows with you down near the OB pier. Hang out and watch the fireworks. Afterward, walk down onto the sand, open those bags of puffy missiles and let fly at the dim "adult" shapes in the dark. It is so liberating to bonk fellow humans in the dark with marshmallows ... nothing like it! It is great fun until those who have had a wee bit too much to drink start trying to recycle the puff-missiles that have fallen into the sand.

Who steals a peace sign? That's just so wrong.
