Do I Overreact or Just Overeat?

So here’s what happened.

On Saturday morning, I decided against running on the closed off trails. I’d violated the rules last winter after a rainstorm, but that was before I lived close by. I have a different kinship with this place now, and easier access. I can run any other time, I thought.

Then, inspired by so many of your comments, I decided to go for it Sunday morning, when it’s even less likely someone will see me head in or head out. I got about a half mile in when I was stopped in my tracks by this shrill, primal scream coming from the dense foliage that lines the main creek bed. It most definitely came from a four-legged animal, but it was hard to tell whether it was domestic or feral. Most likely, a dog or a coyote was caught or struck, even killed, by a rattlesnake. In any case, if that’s what happened when you broke the rules, I wanted no part of it. So I ran hard as I could back to the suddenly attractive roadside, vowing to not return until it was sanctioned by the city’s parks and rec.

On another note, today I read an interesting article in the Los Angeles Times about how much environment might factor into the current obesity epidemic. Scientists are now wondering if the proliferation and easy access to processed foods is behind the spike in weight gains during the past 25 years. I personally think there’s some merit to that claim. Our portions have grown, as has the number of fast food offerings. There’s a section in the article about how difficult habits are to break that’s worth considering. I know that I tend to get hungry at specific times of the day, regardless of when and what I eat. And that if I splurge on snacks at the grocer, they get eaten within a few days despite my resolve to parse them out to last a week. At best, I might be able to trick myself into delaying a Costco-sized craving for a day or two. But I’m working on it, one banana chip and corn nut at a time.

People make fun of me becuase I never have food at my house except vegetables and fish. But if I buy that other stuff, then I will sit and eat it- in ONE sitting. Whenever I'm at my bf's house, I'm in his pantry just eating all kinds of crap. He calls me the "the viddler." I don't even know what that means.

Anyway - if it's not there, then i won't eat it. But if it is there - you better watch your Triskets.

It so depends on what it is. I can ignore corn nuts, most chips, store-bought cookies, trail mix. Harder with plain old soda crackers, chocolate chips, pretzels. I could totally ignore banana chips - they are not even on my radar!

A primal scream is a very good deterent to a trespassing runner.

With the food, its the old "eat it all now so I don't have to deal with it later" syndrome. I know this behavior well.

I just made a vow tonight to ditch the processed foods. From day to day, I can gain or lose up to 12 pounds by eliminating or eating processed foods.

I also read a while back that some of the items added back into the food after it is "processed" are highly addicted...for what it is worth, I am not surprised.

I hope to see you around, on the road. I think you made the best choice by not going it alone.

Primal scream, hmm I have enough problems when a bird I have never seen before crosses my path.

The only processed thing left in the cupboard is my mint biscuits two a night, but when they run out, nothing like that for a long time.

I'm with P.O.M. If it's not there, I won't eat it! I'm a sucker for tortilla chips!

Screw the eating habits, if it makes you happy...eat it! I knew you would run and you did it because of pressure....hmmm let this be a lesson to the college girls, see what happens when you break the rules...

BOTH!!! You overreact and overeat. If that's not enough you will overcook. have a beer.

If it was easy, we'd all be thin as rails. Be kind to yourself. Think of all the ways you touch others' lives with running, organizing runs, reaching out through writing, and your family. You have an enviable balance!

You can never be too careful. Always trust your instincts.
Female species are not safe deep in the woods.

Cookie being sent your way for getting off of that environmentally-fragile trail! (I was the one voice of dissent.)

Or wait, are you saying that you're not going to eat cookies anymore?? Oh well, I'll just eat it (and 5 others) myself. In other words, I can relate!

Processed foods yes, but especially High Fructose Corn Syrup. Start reading labels, especially on foods targeted at kids. That crap is in EVERYTHING. Our bodies weren't meant to ingest that much concentrated energy within such a short amount of time. Not only has it made us fat, it's interfered with our endocrine systems to the point we are fast becoming a diabetic nation as well. Oh, Anne, you opened up a big can of worms with me when it comes to the industrial food system and our nation's failing health. You know I could go on for days.

Banana chips and corn nuts? oh no... no, no, no!

I gained 10 pounds eating CostCo trail mix - either the kind with M&Ms in it or the kind with dried papya. Both delicious, both deadly.

The trick with these things is to go cold turkey and never look back. Now I need to stop thinkig about my beloved trail mix *sniff sniff*

Thanks for the link, but honestly I couldn't even finish reading the article...I do think that we have a huge problem in America with obesity but I don't think it's fair to say that the blame should be put on the food manufacturers...yes, they make trashy food, but where does OUR responsibility as human beings take over? I have no problem NOT eating french fries once I found out what hydrogenated oils are and what they do to you. It was hard in the beginning to give them up, but now I don't miss them at all (or I'll eat baked ones at home!)

Anyway, I'll get off my soap box. Thanks for sharing! And glad you decided to head back after that primal scream!
