While the running community continues to deconstruct the Chicago Marathon's mid-race cancellation and other major U.S. running events' handling of unusually hot weather, I wanted to draw attention to another scandal over in Berlin.
Seems a Mexican politician may have cheated his way to an age group award in the Berlin Marathon. A sports photographer first alerted officials after noticing the guy reached the finish line rather overdressed in tights, a windbreaker and a hat to others' shorts and tank tops. This led to an audit of his chip times, and it appears he took a big shortcut (though he wouldn't be the first to claim a mat malfunction).
You can read the story here.
And thanks to Sandy in PA for bringing the story to my attention.

lol geesh if ur gonna cheat at least dress the part:-)
I saw this story last week. My first thought was, "He did a Rosie Ruiz!" What a LOSER.
I just read this in this mornings paper...what a dork! An election and now this... makes you wonder what else he has gotten away with...
We just had someone from Mexico be adopted by our local running club (well, sortof....he travels to our area for business a few times a year and didn't start running until he found us...now he's taken running back to his hometown in Mexico and gotten his whole family involved.) Anyway, he posted this to our club forum and commented about how embarrassed he was to even be associated (thru running and being Mexican) with this slime bag!
The story about the Berlin race cheater was simply amazing. I can't imagine why he thought he could get away with it. When I saw how he was dressed, I immediately thought that he arranged for a motocycle ride around the edge of the course.
isn't it nuts that someone would cheat with all the timing mats these days?
Any runner reading it could've spotted the fake an hour away.
