For those that like spinning their wheels, there's an article in today's Washington Post on Spinning 101. Such cycling's very good for your core when done properly, according to the article.
For those wanting to improve flexibility for a good stretch, I like the exercises suggested on this site.
I also like Pilates mat exercises but no longer have time to take a class, so I've been taping short (12- to 20-minute) Pilates and yoga shows on a special Exercise TV station available from one of the Free on Demand stations on digital cable. One of these days, I'm actually going to replay the tapes and do the workouts.
On a different note, my friend Cindy sent me a few pictures from Saturday's race. That's my friend Denise as we entered the 10k aid station. These core exercises will certainly help improve my running form; posing as a serious competitor is an entirely different matter. I think it's time for me to hang out with the Marines again.

I love the 'secret' in the bike article, and that stretch in the other one is what I feel like at the end of most days.
I honestly usually find stretch, core, and stability exercises in random magazines and do them while I'm watching the news at night - that's when they fit into my schedule.
While I was running the other day, I was thinking about your 'positive thoughts' during your 20k and how amazing a feat that acutally is to not enter the idea of negative thinking for that long. It really says a lot about the individual - it's really pretty cool. (So why worry about core training . . . ):)
That is exactly why I continue to get up and teach the 6 am Pilates class - because if I didn't, I wouldn't do it at all! This forces me to get myself to the Y. I keep saying I'm going to add a third workout into the week, but it doesn't seem to be happening.
you guys look so happy and fresh!
Thanks for the helpful links - I need to do more core-strengthening as well. And love the photos! Aloha from Hawaii.
Coreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yes I miss a few of those workouts as well. but it's been better lately, thank goodness.
Good luck with fitting the core IN your weekly routine.
Nice Pics
can I hang out with the marines too?
Thanks for the links. I have a hard time doing core workout. So I try to do at least 15 minutes every other day. It seems more manageable than a longer session.
Great pics, seems like you both had fun.
i can see you had a blast - great job!
I will have to branch out some day beyond my 3 runs a week. This is pretty inspirational!
Have you thought of yoga. I realize it was all the rage with the Atkins set a while back, but it's easy to do anywhere and fits in nicely with your running strategy.
Great photos!
Like wannabe5ker I dream of one day going beyond just the 3 runs a week, but haven't managed it so far.
Like runnersusan, I wanna sign up to work out with the marines!
My pilates instructor once said that a good exercise to do (with no additional work required) is this:
While you are driving, or sitting at a red light, contract your ab muscles as much as you can. The goal being to not have your abs touch the lap part of the belt. It works and takes no additional time or exercise equipment!
I have been teaching Pilates for 18 years, have equipment in my house, and still find it really hard some days to get myself going! So I also try to schedule myself in and teach classes so that I am forced to get out and move.

I wish you lived closer because I could sure tap into your core when it's time to put 500 bales of hay in the barn! And yes, I handle each and every one of them.
ah yes! we are on the same wave length, i'm all about the core too! great photos!
5 minutes a day, lets promise to do abs for 5 minutes 3 times a week. whatdaya say? lately i'm not doing so well about getting to the gym.
the marines will be glad to see you.
I am in denial about how much I've been avoiding both lifting weights and stretching. I admit it - I'm an aerobic junkie. Someday... (Ha!)
